The authenticated SMTP service will allow you to send email through the CNR-IOM mail server with Thunderbird (and the likes) even when outside the MM building (if your ISP allows you to connect to the port 587)

To set this function you have to open Thunderbird and right click on your CNR-IOM account. Choose Properties, at the bottom you will find the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" entry

  1. click on Add
  2. as Description enter CNR-IOM
  3. Server Name: smtp.iom.cnr.it
  4. Port: 587
  5. check "Use name and password"
  6. "User Name:" enter your username (with @iom.cnr.it)
  7. enable STARTTLS
  8. click OK
  9. optional step: click on the CNR-IOM entry a click on "Set Default"

Now you have to go back to the CNR-IOM account settings (click on the account name) and select CNR-IOM as "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" on the bottom right. Click OK.

When you send the next email you will have to accept a security certificate and enter your account password.
